Chairman – Portfolio Manager

Jim has been an influential market strategist and mentor to some of the finest minds on Wall Street. His views and proprietary investment disciplines developed at C.J. Lawrence have served investors well over many investment cycles. Prior to re-launching C.J. Lawrence in 2015, Jim was Vice-Chairman of ISI Inc. and a member of ISI Group’s Investment Committee since 1999. From 1995 to 1999, Jim was the Chief Investment Officer of Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. after it acquired Morgan Grenfell/C.J. Lawrence in 1989. Previously he was Chairman and President of C.J. Lawrence and its successor companies from 1973 to 1995.

Jim first joined Cyrus J. Lawrence & Sons as a financial analyst. In 1962, he was promoted to Research Director. In 1964, he was made a General Partner of the firm and became Managing Partner in 1971. When C.J. Lawrence incorporated in 1973, he was named Chief Executive Officer. Jim is a former Director of The New York Stock Exchange (1986-92) and of the Securities Industry Association.

Jim received his M.B.A. from the Wharton Business School and his B.A. from Williams College.  For nine years he was Chairman of the Board of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and currently is a Life Trustee there and at the Clark Art Institute.  He has been a Trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and a member of the Williams College Investment Committee.  He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Bernhard Koepp

CEO – Portfolio Manager

Bernhard has been advising private and institutional clients for more than 25 years, through a variety of investment cycles. Bernhard applies his extensive knowledge of global markets and bottom up security selection to construct tailor made portfolios for the discerning investor. Prior to spearheading the re-launch of C.J. Lawrence, Bernhard joined ISI Inc. in 1999 together with a team led by Jim Moltz in order to launch ISI Inc.’s account management initiative.

Bernhard began his career in 1989 at Deutsche Bank AG, London, in its structured/corporate finance division. As a banker he worked on project and asset-based finance deals for large multi-national corporations. In 1993, he joined Deutsche Bank Securities in New York where he transitioned to Asset Management, including as a part of the CIO office of DB’s Private Banking division. In conjunction with Jim Moltz, he launched and managed Deutsche Bank’s Top 50 U.S. Fund and DB Bulldog Portfolios. In addition to managing individual accounts for high net worth individuals, Bernhard directs C.J. Lawrence’s thematic investment offerings, including the American Renaissance, European Select, and Bulldog Portfolios.

Bernhard received his M.A. in International Relations & Economics from Johns Hopkins University, SAIS and his B.A. in International Studies from George Mason University. Bernhard is also the President and Trustee of The Opera Foundation, a New York based non-profit involved in the arts.

Bruce W. Benedict, CFA

Senior Managing Director – Portfolio Manager


seasoned investment manager, Bruce draws from a distinguished career spanning multiple market cycles. Prior to the relaunch of C.J. Lawrence in 2015, Bruce managed client portfolios at ISI Inc. alongside the current team of C.J. Lawrence investment professionals. Together with long-time friend and business partner, Jim Moltz, Bruce joined ISI Inc. in 1999.

Bruce began his investment career in 1965 at Cyrus J. Lawrence & Sons as a securities analyst, making Partner in 1969. Successive appointments at Cyrus J. Lawrence included Director of Research 1970-1984, Managing Director of Investment Banking 1985-1990, and Managing Director Investment Management 1990-1999. Bruce helped manage the dramatic expansion of C.J. Lawrence in 1986 when Morgan Grenfell purchased the firm, and again in 1989 when Deutsche Bank acquired Morgan Grenfell. Bruce was instrumental in developing C.J. Lawrence’s research effort into one of the leading research teams on Wall Street.

Bruce received his B.A. in Economics from St. Lawrence University, and after serving as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, completed his M.B.A. at Columbia Graduate School of Business. He is a long-term trustee at St. Lawrence University, and served as the University’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1995. In addition to his experience on the St. Lawrence Investment Committee, he has also chaired the Investment Committee of the Children’s Aid and Financial Service of New Jersey, among others. Bruce is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

David J. Gallacher, CFA

Senior Managing Director – Portfolio Manager


rior to becoming a Partner at C.J. Lawrence in 2015, David was a Managing Director at ISI Inc. where he expanded ISI’s private client business and international money management capabilities. At ISI and now C.J. Lawrence, David is the lead portfolio manager of our international portfolios, including the European Select UIT sponsored by AAM.

David began his career in financial planning at A.O.N. Risk in the U.K. before joining Coutts & Co. in 1996. As a portfolio advisor and team leader, David led Coutts & Co.’s U.K. and European direct equity strategies. At Coutts, he was directly responsible for managing substantial assets for high net worth clients in the U.S. and Europe.

Transferring to the U.S. in 2006, David launched Royal Bank of Scotland/Citizens, N.A. global investment management platform for U.S. high net worth clients. He acted as the senior portfolio manager for the group’s core global and global ex-U.S. investment strategies.

David attended Bournemouth University in the U.K., concentrating in accountancy and holds a B.A. degree from Harvard University. As a Chartered Financial Analyst, he holds the U.K.’s IMC accreditation and has passed the Charted Market Technicians exam program.

E. Terrence Gardner, Jr.

Senior Managing Director – Portfolio Strategist

Terry rejoined his former colleagues from C.J. Lawrence in 2015, bringing a wide range of experience to the firm’s investment management effort. Terry directs our portfolio strategy effort and chairs our weekly investment policy meetings. Prior to C.J. Lawrence, he provided strategic advice to companies in the institutional research and wealth management sectors via his own firm, Gardner Capital. He also held senior positions at ITG Investment Research and New York based Soleil Securities Corp. From 2005 until 2008, he served as President of S-2 Research, Inc., a proprietary research firm and as COO for XTF Global Asset Management, a manager of portfolios of exchange traded funds.

From 1994 until 2005, Terry served in various management and analytical roles at C.J. Lawrence Inc., later acquired and renamed Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc., including COO for Deutsche Bank’s Global Equities Research Division. He began his research management career in 2000, when he was appointed Associate Director of North American Equity Research at Deutsche Bank, a position he held for four years. Prior to that, Terry was an Equity Research Analyst covering the Transportation sector. Terry began his Wall Street career in 1993 at Alex Brown and Sons as an Associate Research Analyst covering transportation and logistics companies.

From 1988 to 1993, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Terry serves on the Board of Directors for the Marines’ Toys for Tots Foundation and the Long Island Event Board for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Terry is a graduate of St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in Economics.
